What’s the difference between concrete and cement?
This may sound like an elementary question, but surprisingly most people do not know the difference. Cement is any type of binder that holds materials together. Concrete, on the other hand, is a mixture of sand, gravel, and small rocks that get combined with the cement and water.
Today most concrete is made up of Portland Cement, sand and aggregate (stones). When the mix is wet and ready to be poured, that is concrete.
When working with bricks and concrete you can use a mortar mix. Here the aggregate (stones) should be removed and replaced with lime. This makes the mixture sticky and adds a touch of elasticity to prevent cracking. However, when going below grade, the lime needs to be removed from the mixture or the concrete will break down.
